HIPAA & Educational Data
Understanding HIPAA in Education
The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) protects health information in healthcare settings. While Classroom Pulse is primarily an educational tool governed by FERPA, we maintain strong privacy protections that align with HIPAA principles when handling sensitive student behavioral data.
Important Clarification
Educational records maintained by schools are generally covered by FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act), not HIPAA. However, Classroom Pulse implements security practices that meet or exceed HIPAA standards to ensure the highest level of protection for sensitive behavioral data.
Our Privacy Commitments
Data Encryption
All data is encrypted in transit using TLS 1.3 and at rest using AES-256 encryption, meeting HIPAA technical safeguard requirements.
Access Controls
Role-based access controls ensure that only authorized educators can view student data. All access is logged and auditable.
Data Minimization
We collect only the minimum necessary data for educational purposes. Medical diagnoses and protected health information are not required.
Audit Trails
Comprehensive audit logs track all data access and modifications, supporting compliance verification and security monitoring.
Secure Infrastructure
Our infrastructure is hosted on SOC 2 Type II certified cloud providers with physical and administrative safeguards in place.
When HIPAA May Apply
In certain circumstances, student health records may be subject to HIPAA:
- School-based health clinics operated by covered entities
- Healthcare providers billing insurance for school services
- Integration with healthcare systems or EHRs
